Our assessment of poultry feed output indicates that the upward trend has slowed over the past few years in line with the less rapid expansion seen in poultry meat and egg production. Our estimated total production from commercial feed mills for both poultry meat and layers topped 300 million tonnes (mt) for the first time in 2006.
In 1994 output expanded by some 3. 7 percent, then fell to 3. 3 percent in 2005. The cutback in many countries brought the global increase down to less than 2 percent in 2006, while our assessment of growth in 2007 is just over 2 percent as feed output climbed from 304mt to 311mt.
Watt’s Feed International, reports that despite the handicaps ranging from ingredient price increases to outbreaks of animal diseases, the total tonnage of animal feed produced by commercial and integrated feed mills expanded by 3. 5 percent in 2007 to a new record high topping 680mt.
The top 10 producers of compound feed in that year represented 81 percent of the global total and they were: the USA (152.7mt), the European Union (146.6mt), China (84.0mt), Brazil (53.6mt), Mexico ( 25.2mt), Japan ( 24.7mt), Canada ( 22.6mt), Russia ( 18.3mt), S. Korea ( 15.7mt) and Thailand
Looking at the regional production of poultry meat, 35 percent was in Asia, 23 percent Northern America, 16 percent Latin America and the Caribbean and 15 percent in Europe. For eggs, the picture would be quite different with 61 percent in Asia, 16 percent in Europe, 9 percent in Latin America and the Caribbean and 9 percent in Northern America. However this assumption is not a true picture as, while for global poultry meat output, we assume that 10 percent is from backyard flocks and 1 0 percent from culled layers, these percentages would not hold true for every region.
Similarly, we assumed that possibly 20 percent of eggs do not come from commercial flocks which again, would not be true for all areas of the world. So these feed output estimates should not be taken too literally. However, it would be reasonable to assume that the growth trend is broadly in line with that shown in the accompanying graph and that the output of poultry feed by commercial and integrated feed mills will represent 40-45 percent of the total for all livestock.
